AZANIA is a word known in South Africa to represent the free homeland. There it's meaning was, for many years, more conceptual than real. It always related more to the struggle than to the achievement, but the yearning for a promised land is timeless and universal. Recent years have seen great strides toward a unified homeland in South Africa, but the journey continues there as it does around the world.

The family odyssey that began over one hundred years ago in China brought the Mason Great grand-parents to south Africa in search of a better life and wider horizons. After eighteen years enveloped in British/Dutch/African/Chinese culture and musical traditions, Aidan followed his own path to England and finally to Canada.

The music of Azania is a contrast of styles and emotions. Equal parts joyous and melancholy, naive and sophisticated, the melodies and rhythms criss-cross the landscape, from sweltering desert heat to northern cool. But like a rainbow, the many musical colours lead always to a place just over the horizon.

Sense of Soul

Released: 2001

I enjoy the process of writing songs with James. We would often write 3 to 4 in a session and not reflect on them until the day after. However, I was fairly concerned with the songs making sense; lyrically. No matter how simple or complicated the song, it had to make sense to me. Listeners should draw their own conclusions I think, but if memory serves, the following touches on what inspired the songs.
-Chris

Before I begin to tell you what each song means to me, I should explain that at the time of conception I was more concerned with the moment rather than the plan; the vibe, if you will. I never realized the importance until the end.
-James
